Transitional Housing for Youth
New build, Care occupancy
Maskwacis, Alberta
Complete Dec 2026
This transitional housing is intended for indigenous young adults from 18-24 who will get the chance to heal with their community in their next steps of independence in adulthood. This project is almost completely off the grid, with only additional power supplied to supplement the solar panels. Ground source geothermal heat pumps heat the building, and water, septic and storm are all resolved on site. The most important design factor is that this building should feel like a peaceful home that can accommodate an epic feast with the community once a season. This project is close to our hearts and we owe all of the success to the amazing indigenous run not-for-profit who deeply understands their community and what they need who lead us to this design.

Upgrade and Addition, Animal Care

This fun and functional transformation/addition looked at updating to modern best practices for animals and care takers. We shadowed the staff to personally understand the function of every day activities, and all departments passionately told us what was most important from their perspective. We were very impressed with their expertise and integrity for animal wellbeing. Key updates were included as well as a few playful details, because whimsy still matters! Come see it complete this fall, and adopt a cute animal while you're at it.

(In collaboration with Purple Llama Architecture)
This stiff competition was earned through a hyper local approach to master planning. It was a collab between two women owned firms, Tula in Edmonton and Purple Llama in Calgary. As the local firm, Tara from Tula identified the most charming and intriguing commercial and public interventions, anchors and gathering points already loved by Edmontonian's. Then both firms collaborated to study why these spots might be so delightful. Then took Jo's (Purple Llama) decades of master planning experience to hone them in, and find ways to incorporate them into our neighbourhood masterplan submission.

This commercial complex of 7 buildings, a gas bar and a car wash was designed with the Beaumont aesthetic guidelines based on "french villa" aesthetic of traditional brick cladding, lots of glazing, and black metal details. The client was highly focused on ensuring the site was walkable, with extra wide sidewalks, boulevard trees, and raised sidewalks across roads. The clients determination for quality was obvious when almost the entire plaza was leased before construction was complete.

This little coffee shop built with Colliers in the heart of downtown is a one year "pop-up" while the permanent coffee shop on the main floor is being designed for Roam Coffee. This simple design includes everything required for a coffee shop but nothing more. Herringbone stone, light features and black counters will greet all the caffeine addicts in the towers above until the new coffee shop is complete!
Tula is also designing the main floor coffee shop! More to share soon.

This minimalist building houses the Parkland Potato Varieties potato brokers, where they do business and inspect their potential product. This client was interested in efficient use of budget and functional layouts while maintaining nice clean design aesthetics and a lovely open office feel.

Little Bear Gelato

Design concept
The well loved gelato maker in Edmonton named after a nickname for his little boy got a design for a (quite literally) brick and mortar shop. The european owner makes gelato from scratch the traditional way. This building would be nestled in the french quarters near the Columbian coffee.

This cute little addition to the MESC maintenance building was designed for function. The roof needed to stay at the height of existing, but the main floor needed to be on grade for storage. this resulted in the second floor having some rather charming cathedral ceiling which feels airy and pleasant. The team was able to complete this build on an extremely short timeline, and on budget to ensure the IT department had their space before the school year started. This was thanks to Chandos Red deer who ensured a smooth and well executed construction through great communication and collaboration.

Skills Society provides daily living supports, housing, and advocacy for children and adults with developmental disabilities and survivors of acquired brain injuries. Rooted in the disability rights movement, they help empower individuals to thrive as valued citizens in the community.
Our work: Tara was on the research team in 2021 exploring innovation in inclusive housing, 2026 Tula is applying that research in cluster housing for potential functional and financial housing solutions for people with developmental disabilities.
